• The only energy boost you'll ever need for your bike

The world is full of everyday fail. But, every now and then comes that EPIC FAILZ that crosses the level of legendary. Yup, the kind that spawns brand new motivation posters. No less.

  • Live Messenger broken after Windows Vista SP2

I know I'm cursed, the lightning rod for all the chance strikes that could have turned me into a billionaire if all these probability math worked for me when it comes to lotteries. But no, this time round I blame Microsoft! Yeap, and so Service Pack 2 was released to the masses via Windows Update yesterday. I acted on it without hesitation given ...

  • Windows Virtual PC for Windows 7 - how to create new machines?

Microsoft knows the experience of torturing people into a zillion application breakages with the upgrade to Windows Vista. Painfully. So this time round with Windows 7, a new strategy is being tried out to keep the masses happy with their legacy applications - Windows XP Mode. Using a modified Virtual PC 2007, the process of installing and booting ...

  • Re: Installing TFS 2008: Error 29112 28806 28805 with SQL Server Reporting Services

Breaking News I think the cause of this identity crisis problem has been discovered. It is fairly natural for impoverished folks like us who face the daily harsh realities of the slums to not be able to afford to procure actual physical hardware for every server required for each of these infrastructure scenarios. We are not tax collectors. The ...

  • Re: System.EntryPointNotFoundException Unable to find an entry point named GetPropertyHandle in DLL wminet_utils.dll

That error appears to be specific to SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) for SQL Server 2005; are you interfacing with SSIS in your ASP.NET application? I highly doubt they are related as SQL Server 2005 is based on .NET 2.0. The WMI helper DLL exhibiting the problem is from the .NET 1.1 installation.

  • Matryoshka dolls for the Windows professional

Matryoshka dolls fascinated me when I was a kid. The childish joy of realising that encased within a doll was, a smaller doll! And then within that, another one! This recursive discovery ad infinitum was truly an ingenious device to keep a naive boy occupied for hours. Until he grows wiser and learns that repetition in the real world often means ...

  • Office custom dictionary

One of my greatest irritants with spell checkers is how they default to US English. I happen to be born and bred in Singapore, a former British colony, so I prefer to spell words properly thank you. ;-) So it is pretty annoying to be informed over and over again on five different computers of Microsoft Word or PowerPoint that I should not be ...

Ever have your heart burning with love and pride for your operating system of choice? Sure you do! You know it to be true when the Windows flag is waved up and high in the middle of every Windows Explorer window!

  • You are never steadier than your flash

Today I found myself in a very impromptu situation. My company reserved a hotel ballroom to brief employees on the progress half way past the FY. Since it was not exactly a big event, there no was photographer officially engaged to capture the scene. Except, I happened to be carrying my digital SLR camera. It was no surprise when I was asked to ...

  • Re: Goodbye backaches. And don't bother to visit me again.

Here is an extra fact - that chair delivered last month was a temporary chair. The TriFlex back support piece was not the promised colour I originally ordered for. Well, this month they rolled in the correct colour into my room. Just a tiny effort to be more green, given the carbon footprint I leave behind for my running machines.

  • Selling my soul to the devil for food

I have a confession to make. I am a junk food junkie. Like the workaholic who is addicted to coffee, or the drunkard to the beer jug, I have an insatiable craving for extra sugar and salts. I mean, a can of coke and large-size Doritos are just perfect consumables for sitting back, relaxing, and watching shows. Would you recommend ...

  • Directory Service is busy : Active Directory may not always provide the appropriate error message

In the past month, I have been helping out our customer look into some troubles their user account provisioning jobs have been encountering. (i.e. update particulars, move OUs, ...

Two years on. What else have i learnt and cultivated to maximise the ROI for my ''spare'' bouts of time? Well, I have succeeded in exponentially increasing my procrastination durations, and drastically decreasing my energy and motivation to get things done. :-) One of my favourite procrastination activities is to listen to podcasts from ...

  • System.EntryPointNotFoundException Unable to find an entry point named GetPropertyHandle in DLL wminet_utils.dll

So here I am stationed with a huge customer, with a huge legacy .NET 1.1 application base. Oops, did I just call .NET 1.1 ''legacy''....??? When one regularly travels at the speed of light, everything else appears to be in perpetual standstill. The rate of progression with Microsoft software is so incredibly swift that those of us who (attempt to) ...

  • Signs your colleague may not be a good developer #3

It has long been my suspicion, that many organisations do not permit their application source code to be copied out of their premises, not because of security or IP reasons, but to just save themselves from sheer embarassment. Honourary members of the court, allow me to present exhibit ...

My friend posted me one of his photos hosted in Flickr recently, and like any hardcore photographer only provided the static link to the largest size instead of the weak-ass shrunken viewport in the default page. A typical static link would look like this (where n are numbers and a are ...

Welcome 2009! Or to be more specific, Q2 2009! That's right, nearly a decade into the twenty-first century, and loving every moment of technological advancement we have developed and enjoyed for ourselves. In this topic particularly, how we have mind-shifted from boxy 4:3 CRT monitors into smashing 16:10 widescreen LCD goodness. All the more ...

Gibby:Let me test it out when I pop by your place ;) Head over to XTRA @ Park Mall. You can try out the three-sized Aeron chairs as well. After much fiddling around I felt that my back was getting a more intimate caress by the Mirra. I preferred the armrests of the Aeron though.
