    Never EVER throw away manuals

Today my cousin called me on the mobile phone so he could relay the sound his friend's computer motherboard was emitting upon powering up (obviously it couldn't boot up normally).

So without knowledge to what manufacturer and model I am supposed to be dealing with here, I pulled out my magic troubleshooting crystal ball nobody else possesses, and sought the insights of the dead spirits of ages gone by, and this soft whisper of ghostly advice i heard: check up the motherboard manual for that particular pattern of sound (noise, if you find it irritating; howl, if you find it frightening) and see what condition is being communicated.

Motherboards have for many generations been designed to emit various patterns of sound to indicate the various types of failures it can encounter and recognise. The motherboard manual is your life line to deciphering those audio patterns.

And that brings us to the main point of the day:

What ever hardware device you purchase, always ensure you keep the operating manuals in a common, consolidated place. Oftentimes manuals do not carry a bible of knowledge to make you a re-creator of the hardware owned, but they usually list out common problems and troubleshooting steps you can carry out.
