Software design rule #1: Do not try to outsmart your user

Do not, ever, try to assume your software is smarter than the user when it comes to personal choice and preferences.

When you give users the option of customising settings, jolly well respect and honour that decision. Do not go off pretending the software noted the preference, and then come tip-toeing back like a sneaky giggly child and setting it something naughty and mischevious.

Congratulations to Windows Vista's Windows Explorer for making "artistic" guesses about Remote Desktop settings.

    Utter FAIL.
