To share or not to share?

I was browsing through the J2ME forums today and replying to a few posts asking some technical questions(such as my MIDI file won't play, how to play it using J2ME etc etc) when my colleague popped over and asked why do i bother to help them with their work as it's commercial work for their company and that i gain nothing from it, and that i am depriving someone of their livelihood by preventing someone from doing work which comes from answering such technical questions. What would your reply be?

In that case, I must assume your colleague has:
    1. never asked a single technical question in any community in the Internet, ever.
    2. always refused to traverse into any site (from a Google search result) that is really the logging of the above activity.
    3. skips reading any articles written by fellow developers who did it out of their own research effort and time.
    4. always paid for information and knowledge that he possesses today. Either via books or premium online subscriptions. He believes one must be reasonably compensated, financially, for information divulge.
Where does his knowledge come from? Did he accumulate it by himself, from within himself? Did he always answer all his own questions?

So much for the "love thy neighbour" commandment.

I think he has done all of the above,he is a programmer turned artist and is in charge of churning out 3D and 2D artwork.

Ah, and he does not counter those who help him with the same logic as prescribed above for all mankind to live glorious prosperous lives?

Another different thinking of his which i just encountered. This is "When you sell a piece of HTML template, you should make it damned hard to modify so that people can't use it for anything else. Hence, ensuring that you still have a job" and having the innocent effect of pissing off the people who bought your HTML template and discovering it's damned hard to modify.

Clearly he has been practising in good faith the lessons preached here.
